Abstract
Myocardial ischemia is a multifactorial phenomenon that shifts muscle cells towards an anaerobic metabolism. At first, before irreversible damage leads to cell death, the resulting changes are reversible. Both an increase in oxygen supply and a reduction in myocardial energy demand can protect against myocardial ischemia. From a pathophysiological point of view, control of or a reduction in heart rate, combined with the re-establishment of coronary flow, can provide the cornerstone of treatment for this condition.
