Abstract
Nitric oxide performs numerous physiological functions in the cardiovascular system. Nitric oxide pathway dysfunction plays an important role in the origin and development of cardiovascular disease. Therapeutically, modulation of the nitric oxide pathway is a very promising goal. This article contains a review of a number of pharmacological approaches designed to influence the nitric oxide pathway. Special emphasis has been placed on nitric oxide donors. Two particular nitric oxide donors are highlighted: LA 419 (which is under investigation for chronic angina) and LA 816 (which is under investigation as an antithrombotic).
