Abstract
Phytotherapy is currently experiencing a renaissance, but in contrast to the variety of methods known as the so-called alternative medicine, the chemical compounds in plants have well documented biological effect. It is emphasized that the composition of these compounds and their relatively low concentration minimizes the risk of side effects. Drugs of plant origin are used in all branches of otolaryngology. This article discusses available drugs on the domestic market of preparations of natural origin intended for topical application in the states of dysfunction of the mouth and throat mucosa. Among the ingredients of these drugs include calendula, sea buckthorn, Iceland moss, sage, myrrh, peppermint, lemon balm, thyme and propolis extracted from beeswax. Drugs made from these stuff have a well-documented bacteriostatic, immunomodulatory, expectorant, antitussive, radioprotective action. They can be used on its own in chronic conditions or in combination with other drugs in the acute inflammations.
