Abstract
Trauma patients are heavily transfused with allogeneic blood throughout the course of their hospital stay and transfusions are administered at relatively high pre-transfusion haemoglobin levels (mean of 9Â g/dL). Transfusion of >4 units of blood is an independent risk factor for SIRS. Strategies to limit blood transfusions should be investigated in this population.
