Abstract
SummaryRecent progress in nano-optics has paved the route toward the development of highly sensitive and label-free optical transducers using the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of metal nanostructures. In this review we describe the basis behind LSPR sensing and summarize the latest progress regarding nanostructure fabrication techniques and biosensing applications. Direct colorimetric assays reaching sensitivities in the zeptomolar range, or miniaturized multiplexed sensors constitute cutting-edge research in the LSPR biosensing field. We finally discuss the challenges that LSPR biosensors should face in order to be used in the near-future as commercial devices.
