Abstract

BackgroundThe aim of the study was to examine the mediating role of resiliency in the relationship between locus of control and personal growth in a youth group.MethodsThe results of 60 adolescents (of the 130 that participated in the study) who have experienced different negative life events were analyzed. They were students of secondary schools aged 16–17 years (M = 16, 53, SD = 0.50), from the area of Lodz. The boys were 56.7% of the respondents. Personality Growth Questionnaire, the Resiliency Assessment Scale for children and adolescents, and the Questionnaire for Locus of Control Study (QLCS) were used in the study.ResultsMost of the respondents (48.4%) revealed an average level of personal growth. More changes were observed in appreciation of life than in the self-perception and relations with others. Resiliency was positively associated with the level of personal growth. Such correlation was not found for locus of control. The analyses indicated a mediating role of resiliency (general score and the factor 3) in the relationship between locus of control and personal growth (general score and the factor 2).ConclusionsResiliency playing the role of mediator may substantially change the relationship between locus of control and personal growth. Thus, high levels of the personality traits and internal locus of control may result in high levels of growth after trauma.
