Abstract
The MAT locus determines the sexual compatibility of heterothallic fungi. The MAT locus studies of the ascomycetes led to the discovery of new evolutionary aspects of the hetero-and homothallic species. It has been hypothesized that the MAT genes have the potential to delimit the frontiers amongst species, and its utility has been demonstrated in evolutionary and phylogenetic analyses. In anamorphic species, evidence of recent sexual reproduction could have an important impact on population genetic studies and on disease management strategies.
