Abstract
Ultrasound artifacts result from physical phenomena that alter the ultrasound images from the corresponding anatomical sections. They arise either from different absorption problems or inadequate reflection. Reverberation artifacts, comet tail, mirror image, shadow cone, posterior reinforcement, anisotropy and duplication are distinguished. There are also other types of artifacts associated with ultrasound machines and sensor technology, malfunction and the environment. Regular monitoring of sensor status and camera settings is required to alleviate artifacts. Knowledge of artifacts is essential for improving the diagnostic performance of the technique.
