Abstract
•With a 10% increase of nurses holding a bachelor's degree or above, 1 per 1000 hospitalized patients could avoid death.•A 10% increase in the proportion of nurses with a higher degree in a hospital can reduce the odds of failure to rescue by 5%.•All the evidence comes from Western health care systems.•Evidence from non-Western systems is needed.
