Abstract

This paper provides a systematic classification of existing Load Shedding (LS) methods and proposes a novel LS algorithm, with specific reference to industrial systems power plants. The proposed technique is based on a combination of the information provided by the measurement of the frequency, as in many frequency-based LS approaches, with the information available on the status of the generators, like in LS power-based techniques. In this way, it is possible to guarantee fast response in front of generator trips together with the possibility to fully take advantage of the available spinning reserve. Simulation results are reported to illustrate the performance of the proposed approach and to compare them to those guaranteed by consolidated techniques.

► We provide a review of load shedding methods for industrial systems power plants. ► We focus on mismatch detection and deficiency estimation steps. ► We propose a new hybrid load shedding method. ► Simulation results illustrate the performance of the proposed approach. ► We show the advantages of the hybrid approach with respect to existing methods.
