Abstract

Proportional–integral (PI) controller is widely applied in power system control systems. PI parameters setting is important but time consuming and usually needs experience. As more and more multi-infeed High Voltage Direct Current (MIHVDC) systems established the question is whether these PI parameters fitting single HVDC system are still proper for MIHVDC systems? In this paper, closed-loop transfer function model including inverter side is deduced and improved, small signal model and electromagnetic transient model of HVDC are built on the same MATLAB platform to consistently judge which is super for PI parameter optimization, and four HVDC models of different detail levels are compared to show which should be selected for PI parameter optimization. A system for optimization of PI parameters in MIHVDC system is also set up with electromagnetic transient model and the results show that the parameters optimized fulfill the stability margin requirement and dynamic performance indices even better.

► Multi-infeed HVDC (MIHVDC) test system includes two symmetric CIGRE benchmark HVDC systems with a tie line. ► Several models are compared with Electromagnetic transient model (EMT). EMT is most accurate for MIHVDC modeling. ► The integral of time interval multiplied by the absolute value of error (ITAE) is taken as the objective function. ► Controller parameters are optimized by the Particle Swarm algorithm. ► ITAE of MIHVDC is even better than ITAE of HVDC.
