Abstract
Wide area signals have been suggested to enhance the dynamic performance of large interconnected power systems. Time delays introduced by remote signal transmission and processing may cause stability problems and cannot be neglected in system operation. Pade approximation method is adopted to express the system model with input time delay. Then a phase compensator is proposed for SVC supplementary control to damp inter-area oscillations in this paper. Eigenvalue analysis and simulation studies on a 16-machine power system have been carried out to illustrate the effect of time delay and the performance of delay compensator.
