Abstract
► DFA is often used to estimate the scaling exponent of neurophysiological signals. ► We extend DFA to characterise potentially changing scaling exponents. ► We validate the method using surrogate data with time-varying scaling exponents. ► We systematically examine the dependence of the method on its free parameters. ► We demonstrate the applicability of the method to neurophysiological signals.
