Abstract
A novel and efficient mixture model fitting technique, called penalized minimum matching distance-guided expectation–maximization (EM) algorithm, is proposed. Penalized minimum matching distance is used to find the number of mixture components very accurately. We illustrate the excellent performance of the penalized minimum matching distance-guided EM algorithm with experiments involving Gaussian mixtures.
