Abstract
Simulation and evaluation of critical infrastructures for analysis and planning of processes and procedures increasing the robustness and fault tolerance of the overall infrastructure while limiting the overall cost are essential in an environment in which core infrastructures are operated by private enterprise. Several objectives need to be taken into account, including the interests of the society at large depending on the proper functioning of critical infrastructures, the requirements of interdependent infrastructures, and also those of the owners and stakeholders in the infrastructure element itself. This paper reviews approaches for the simulation and evaluation of infrastructure elements and presents recent research in the field.
