Abstract
In this paper, we will review techniques to achieve 100 Gb/s and higher optical channels; review the impact upon system reach; review the benefits of using multiple carriers; and discuss how optical integration is a key enabling technology for future low cost high capacity systems.
► High spectral efficiency creates a reach capacity tradeoff. ► Multi-carrier ‘super channels’ provide a technical means to high capacity channels. ► Integration is required for low cost high capacity optical systems.
