Abstract
Optical back propagation techniques that utilize two highly nonlinear fibers to compensate for transmission fiber nonlinear effects are analyzed. When the step-size is equal to the amplifier spacing, inline compensation of fiber nonlinearity without inline dispersion compensation provides the best performance.
► Idea of analog optical “back propagator” (OBP) is extended. ► A technique to realize an effective negative Kerr nonlinear coefficient discussed. ► OBP can also be used in both coherent and direct detection systems. ► OBP could be used in real time and it is compatible with WDM.
