Abstract
3-D mesh refinement strategies are the object of interest in the present paper. The dependence of finite element solutions on various refinement procedures is discussed. A new refinement strategy, which is optimal with respect to the measure of degeneracy for all canonical domains is obtained. Comparisons with known refinement techniques are made. Some isoparametric examples are presented.
