Abstract
We establish formulae for the first and second moment of the number of components of each type (waiting to be assembled or being assembled) in an assembly shop, when each component arrives to the assembly shop according to a Poisson process. By Littleās law, the first moment of makespan in steady state is immediately obtained. We obtain these formulae by a diffusion approximation in heavy traffic.
