Abstract

Some educators are afraid to explore online teaching and learning tools because of the fear that they are unable to control the tools. Or some are even unsure because they lack the knowledge for technical complexities. However, in the advent of many authoring and programming software, the educators only need creativity to produce innovative online teaching and learning activities. This paper aims at investigating the challenges and advantages of using YouTube for an English language course. Students’ responses were gathered after using YouTube for three months, and these data form the basis for analysis and discussion in this paper. It is found that students enjoy new experiences with online tools for various reasons. This paper argues that although the educators are not familiar with new technologies, the only thing that stops them from giving the students an online learning experience is the educators themselves; the students are ready to respond.
