Abstract

This paper describes two types of living labs that are used for testing developing devices in real-world settings. One is a mockup type living lab for the efficacy in fundamental tests of newly developed sensors and the other is real type living labs for evaluating the effectiveness in long-term testing. As case studies of the living labs, the paper presents applications of living lab testbed to develop IoT sensors for supporting healthcare; one is a handrail-IoT for monitoring a walking capability of elderly and the other is a balcony-IoT for preventing serious injury due to balcony fall of children. These case study shows the effeteness of the two types living labs in scaling new healthcare support devices from laboratory settings to more real-world settings seamlessly.
