Abstract
In this study, a new selective filtering technique is proposed for the Lattice Boltzmann Method. This technique is based on an adaptive implementation of the selective filter coefficient Ï. The proposed model makes the latter coefficient dependent on the shear stress in order to restrict the use of the spatial filtering technique in sheared stress region where numerical instabilities may occur. Different parameters are tested on 2D test-cases sensitive to numerical stability and on a 3D decaying Taylor-Green vortex. The results are compared to the classical static filtering technique and to the use of a standard subgrid-scale model and give significant improvements in particular for low-order filter consistent with the LBM stencil.
