Abstract

•A thienyl diketopyrrolopyrrole (TDPP)-based chemosensor for Hg2+, Ag+, Cu2+, and F− is reported.•Hg2+or Ag+ induced aggregation of TDPP is useful for designing nano-chemosensor for thiols.•Based on this multifunctional chemosensing system, elementary logic gates have been constructed.•The signalling mechanism has also been discussed.

3,6-Di(2-Thienyl)-2,5-dihydropyrrolo-[3,4-c]-pyrrole-1,4-dione (TDPP), a simple but versatile and stable dye, can effectively recognize four human health-related ions (Hg2+, Ag+, Cu2+, and F−). TDPP-based elementary logic gates (OR, XOR, and INHIBIT) and a half-subtracter were fabricated. Results demonstrated that TDPP is a potential building block in designing novel and robust chemo/biosensors and molecular logic systems.
