Abstract

•Meta-analysis involves inferences about the mean, the variability and the substantive reasons for variability in effect sizes.•The risks inherent in each of these inferences are reviewed, and a Bayesian approach to using meta-analysis is suggested.•Inferences about the variability in effect size estimates and about the reasons for that variability are difficult to support unless the meta-analysis includes a large number of high-quality studies

Meta-analysis involves inferences about the mean, the variability and the substantive reasons for variability in effect sizes. The risks inherent in each of these inferences are reviewed, and a Bayesian approach to using meta-analysis to determine whether effects vary in important ways is suggested.
