Abstract
Allopurinol is one of the top selling generic drugs in France. But, this is one of the principal medications leading to serious toxic dermal reactions due to misuse, despite the warnings of The French National Agency for Medicines and Health Products Safety (ANSM). We have made an investigation on clinical practice to verify if indications were followed, according to ANSM recommendations, and if dosage was adapted relative to renal function. From 50 prescriptions analysed between 12th of November 2014 to 3rd of February 2015, 14 (28%) were considered non-compliant. For 4 prescriptions, we didn't find any indication, not even after asking the prescribing doctor. The dosage was too high relative to renal function for 7 prescriptions (14%). In 4 cases, it has been reduced after pharmacist intervention. The results of this investigation on clinical practice, contained in the action plan of our commission for drugs and medical devices, were provided to authorities of our institution, general practitioners and all private doctors in the health sector. We plan to repeat this investigation in a few months to measure the impact of our work.
