Abstract
Instabilities of the knee joint can impair the patient in his sportive activity and may lead to osteoarthritis in the long term. For this reason, more attention should be given to prevention. In recent years warm-up programs have been developed to prevent knee injuries. If an injury has occurred, this should be diagnosed and treated adequately. Acute isolated injuries of the medial collateral ligament and the posterior cruciate ligament can be treated non-operatively. For high-grade injuries of the peripheral ligaments surgical treatment may be indicated. The reconstruction of the central pivot can be performed one or two staged. In case of a symptomatic chronic instability of the anterior or posterior cruciate ligament the indication for surgery is made on an individual basis. The surgical methods of choice are anatomical techniques.
