Abstract
Non-communicable diseases are major causes of morbidity and mortality around the world. Patients with metabolic syndrome (MS) and type 2 diabetes have an increased cardiovascular risk (CVR) (x3-5) compared to the non-diabetic population. Metabolic syndrome is a major factor of CVR. Our objective is to establish the profile of shift workers with diabetes and the frequency of diabetes of the population working in a company in southern Algeria. Our retrospective study is descriptive, on the basis of medical records -documented since 1995- of 132 posted male adult diabetics (1995-2014). Diabetics working in a shift work (n = 132) benefiting from a collective catering (3 meals/day) during their stay (4 weeks), followed by 4-weeks rest under a rotation system. Their age (2014) is 51.3 ± 4.7 years; working time is 22.0 ± 7.6 years; they were healthy at recruitment. After an average working time of 16.3 ± 7.5 years, diabetes was diagnosed. In 2014, BMI was greater than 25 kg/m2 in 81.1% of diabetics, and 34.9% were obese. Prevalence of MS was 70.5%, as found in 93 diabetics. The presence of 4 criteria of MS was recorded in 62.4% of diabetics. This is the first study of this type conducted in Algeria; it brings original and important data on MS, diabetes, and CVR, in this male adult population of shift workers.
