Abstract
Taking care of a person diagnosed with a major neurocognitive disorder can be a source of distress for family caregivers. Furthermore, the constant care provided by caregivers often leads to social isolation. In order to reduce caregiver distress, effective and accessible interventions are needed. Offering interventions using web conferences could be an interesting solution to these challenges. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of an intervention based on emotional regulation administered by web conference to family caregivers. Daughters and wives (n = 31) of people with a major neurocognitive disorder participated in 13 weekly group sessions via web conference. The results indicate that the majority of participants (mean age 63.7 years) were comfortable with computers and appreciated their virtual participation in the group. Most participants said the web sessions were comparable to classic face-to-face meetings, and that they would recommend the intervention to their friends. The use of emotion regulation strategies before and after the intervention as well as their effect on caregiver distress were also explored.
