Abstract
The deer velvet antler is widely used in the clinic, replenishing vital essence and strengthening bone. Total velvet antler polypeptides from Cervus elaphus Linnaeus(TVAPL) are effective in preventing bone loss on ovariectomized rats. The mechanism of the action is due to inhibition of IL-1 and IL-6 by natural velvet antler polypetides(nVAP), and promotion of mitosis. Synthetic velvet antler polypeptides(sVAP) has similar bioactivity as nVAP. TVAPL and sVAP may be potential therapeutic agents for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis.165
