•Ionic liquid-coated silica nanoparticles were prepared.•Modified nanoparticles can work as an efficient heat generator under microwave irradiation.•The heating mechanism was cleared.
We describe here the synthesis of imidazolium-presenting silica nanoparticles and the role as a heating source under microwave irradiation. The series of modified nanoparticles with various kinds of counter anions were prepared, and their enhancement abilities of heating under microwave irradiation were compared. Finally, we summarized that the dielectric loss originated from the interaction between imidazolium cation and water molecules should play a crucial role in the heating effect.
