► Copper sulfide hollow spheres have been synthesized by a microemulsion template route. ► The reaction only occurs at the oil/water interface. ► The CuS hollow spheres prepared at room temperature are loose aggregates. ► The content of copper naphthenate is a very important factor for forming hollow spheres.
