Abstract
Application of the Cassie–Baxter equation to the calculation of apparent contact angles is discussed. It is demonstrated that taking into account the precursor film surrounding the drop justifies the application of the Cassie–Baxter equation. Consideration of the precursor film is important for design of self-cleaning superhydrophobic surfaces.
