Abstract
⺠Metagenomics has become one of the most data-rich areas of science. ⺠Reductions in sequencing costs came at the expense of read length. ⺠Annotation of shorter read lengths is problematic. ⺠Single-cell genomics and longer sequencing reads will improve annotation. ⺠Culturing of taxa still important to determine ecological significance of function.
