Abstract
The hierarchical tree in the left figure gives an overview of the research in the field, and serves as a roadmap for the paper. It consists of two main branches. The methods in the left branch have a sequential/iterative approach in which the subproblems of process design, control structure selection, controllability analysis and controller design are considered in sequence. However, recognizing the shared decisions and interactions between these subproblems, the methods in the right branch have an integrated approach in which the abovementioned subproblems are considered simultaneously. While the sequential methods for process design and control ignore the shared domain of decision-making and the interactions between the involved subproblems namely the subproblems of process design, control structure selection, controllability analysis and controller design, the methods for integrated design and control address these subproblems simultaneously.
