Abstract
Historical overview of biomaterial development through the prism of genetic engineering. Recombinant DNA-based fibrous protein production has undergone significant upgrades. Sequence-structure-function has been analyzed to understand how to better design biomaterials with more tunable features. Metabolic engineering has also been utilized to improve the production process and different combinatorial designs have been investigated to generate dynamic biomaterial systems.138
