- The microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii has been genetically engineered to produce xylitol.
- A xylose reductase gene from Neurospora crassa was integrated into the chloroplast genome of C. reinhardtii.
- Codon-optimization and promoter selection were shown to improve xylitol production.
