Abstract
An extension of the utility targeting procedure in the pinch method for heat exchanger network synthesis is presented. The procedure is adequate for targeting the minimum utility use while guaranteeing that utilities will be utilized at conditions with the least departure from the pinch temperature. This approach tends to increase the thermodynamic efficiency of the network and to reduce the cost of utilities.
