Abstract
- First study of the mechanisms of glucose and xylose activation of a β-glucosidase.
- The monomeric enzyme has distinct catalytic (CS) and modulator (MS) binding sites.
- Glucose binding to the MS induces conformational changes that stimulate catalysis at CS.
- Glucose and substrate competition for the CS leads to inhibition at high glucose concentrations.
- Stimulation by glucose and xylose is not synergic, they compete for the same sites.
