► Fertilising soil with digested organic household waste increased the wheat yield. ► Different biogas residues displayed different performance as fertiliser. ► Fertilisation with biogas residues gave higher crop yield than NPK. ► Biogas residues increased soil microbial activity. ► Future development of the biogas energy should also consider the residue quality.
