Abstract
► We identify causal effects of class absence on UK university student performance. ► Random assignment and timetable information is used to address endogeneity issues. ► Panel properties are exploited to control for unobserved heterogeneity. ► We find adverse effects of absence on performance. ► Effects are causal only in the upper part of the conditional performance distribution.
