Abstract
⺠The development of student motivation during primary school was studied. ⺠Task-orientation declined and self-efficacy first declined but then increased. ⺠Teacher-reported school investment increased from grade three to grade six. ⺠Background characteristics related to differences in motivational developments. ⺠Motivational characteristics strongly predicted achievement for all students.
