Abstract
► Middle school students read a brief, moderately difficult text. ► Situational interest and general affect (feeling “good”) decline while reading. ► Higher perceived difficulty predicts steeper declines in both interest and affect. ► Reading fluency significantly predicts subsequent ratings of interest in the task.
