Prediction of sea surface temperature in the tropical Atlantic by support vector machines

► SST is an important environmental indicator monitored by PIRATA buoys. ► A year-ahead prediction procedure is presented and coupled with SVM models. ► Unknown future values are replaced by previous SST averages. ► Predictive ability is evaluated with different data types and training set sizes. ► Overall outcomes point out the proposed methodology as an efficient forecast tool.
