Abstract
⺠We propose a method to measure the potential for social interaction in a metropolitan region. ⺠The method is applied in the densely urbanized area of Flanders and Brussels (Belgium). ⺠We find a strong relationship between the urban spatial structure and the potential for social interaction. ⺠Compact living and high working densities promote the opportunities for social contact.
