Abstract
► This research makes visible the role of the body in interaction during multi-disciplinary ward rounds, looking particularly at how this role changes with the move from paper to electronic medical records. ► It is demonstrated that F-formation systems theory can be a useful tool to analyse multi-person, co-present interactions that utilise technology in hospital settings. ► This study illustrates an electronic medical record system that overcomes the problem of parallel paper systems by integrating appropriate paper usage into the electronic medically record system. ► This research highlights that an important difference between electronic medical records and their paper counter-parts is the divide between the creator of the system and the user in the former circumstance and not in the latter one.
