Abstract
⺠ENSO dynamics are well characterized with a smooth transition autoregressive (STAR) model. ⺠STAR models result in improved forecast accuracy of ENSO in the short and intermediate terms. ⺠STAR models are especially effective in predicting the extreme La Niña episodes.
