Abstract

- We define characteristic states of granular mixtures from probability distributions.
- We derive expected values of some mixing indices for the characteristic states.
- Mixing indices may have different bases of normalisation, which are clarified.
- Some indices are normalised as such that they do not reach unity after ideal mixing.
- We incorporate the Gini coefficient from economics as a new mixing index.
