Abstract
The Brief Emotional Intelligence Scale (BEIS-10) is a relatively new measure of emotional intelligence, but with little psychometric support. Data from a sample of university students was used to assess the internal consistency reliability and factor structure of the BEIS-10 (n = 269), criterion validity with the Big Five (n = 269) and Honesty-Humility (n = 72), and re-test reliability (n = 44). Findings showed that the BEIS-10 was reliable and that the hypothesized five-factor structure was replicated with good model fit, but the expected correlations with the Big Five and the Honesty-Humility subscale of the HEXACO did not emerge, and the scale has low one month test-retest reliability. The mixed findings suggest that this EI measure may be more suitable for some contexts than others.
