Abstract

•The times T1 and T2 of water and hydrocarbons in glass micro beads were measured.•EPR spectra of the glass beads were acquired.•Pore-surface relaxation is explained by unsaturated chemical bonds.•The ratio T1/T2 depends on adsorption time and NMR frequency.•A simple model for pore-fluid relaxation is proposed.

The relaxation of the proton magnetization of water and hydrocarbons in model porous media has been studied. The chemical origin of the active centers, responsible for the paramagnetic mechanism of the surface relaxation of the proton magnetization has been found with EPR. The difference in relaxation behavior of water and hydrocarbon fluids has been explained by a simple model of surface relaxation.
