Abstract
Taking as starting point the persistent and triumphalist announcements of recent Chilean governments, arguing that the country would be next to cross the threshold of economic development, the article asks, in a critical and comprehensive way, on three directly related questions and of more general scope: a) What is meant by economic development?; b) What development opportunities exist for a primary-exporting economy like Chile under current conditions of global capitalism?; c) How is it possible to orient the struggle for economic development under these conditions?
